This article opens with the statement that the Ethiopian government acknowledges their biggest problem, poverty, and that they are taking steps to fix their current situation. It goes on to elaborate about the opening ceremonies and that the brave leaders are committing themselves to good governance which they believe is the solution to poverty in Ethiopia. The opening ceremonies, showcasing performances and poems, also highlighted the historical background of all the sacrifices the Tigrai people have made forcing more people to open their eyes to the problem. The author then establishes an argument against the government's Tigrai gross domestic product (GDP) by thoroughly describing what GDP is exactly and stating that it does not properly measure social costs that they are dealing with, stating that, "It has limited application to evaluate performance of even an industrialized and a commercialized economy." They go on to give examples of different statics that would better illustrate what type of situation the Tigrai people are in. In closing, they highlight what the key terms of good governance are and that they hope to watch the government of Tigrai reach each of those key terms and becoming a flourishing country that uses good governance as a weapon against poverty.
I highly agree that the government of Tigrai are taking the right steps in trying to eradicate the corruption that has formed among their ranks by using good governance. However, after observing history and corrupt governments, i find it highly unlikely for this strategy to work. The government is beyond focused on the economy and politics that the condition of their people are not of any concern. Yet, it seems that with the right people in charge, such as President Abai Woldu, Ethiopia's government and political leaders will start making a turn towards eliminating the corruption and eradicating poverty among it's people.
The actions being taken by the government of Tigrai tie directly into the politics of Ethiopia due to the fact that it is the political leaders who are in charge of the attack against poverty. This will help lead to a more developed country which will lead to wealth and growth. Also, if the political leaders and the government can eradicate poverty, the Ethiopian people will most likely be more educated and appreciative of the ones responsible for getting the country out of poverty which will lead to reelections of those leaders and keep the country moving forward. The government is in control of the economy and thankfully trying to focus on working their way up on the list of wealthy, growing countries through steps such as good governance.
