The article begins with a description of how the Capital Nicosia went through a devastating economic crisis yet the old city is gradually returning to the thriving and bustling streets of its former glory days. It goes on to describe the military involvement in Cyprus and the initial outcomes and effects it had on Cyprus and its people and how everything was divided since 1974. The article then elaborates on the efforts made to reopen Ledra Street and share in the reviving culture many people are pushing for.It goes into detail for each aspect of culture, such as music, art, and food, to help paint a picture of how they are each individually contributing to the revival of Nicosia as a cultural hearth for all Cypriots. It ends with a quote that brings optimism into the topic of Cyprus and it's governmental/political issues that have torn it apart.
Even though politics are talked about very little in this article, it can be seen clearly through the cultre produced by the people living in Nicosia. I believe that the politics and government involved in this article are clear as day through the music and ide produced through the stores and propaganda in Cyprus. The article focuses mainly on the Capital Nicosia and the "Green Line" that is the buffer zone between the North and the South and I believe this is where it is easiest to see the control politics has over culture. The leaders and political people of Cyprus have clearly starting showing their want for reunification and getting back to Cyprus as a whole. There intentions, I believe, can be seen through their allowance of opening checkpoints for crossing and stores to be set up or left that are in or right on the Green Line which helps friendships bloom. I can see how the people of Cyprus are slowly, with the help of politics, healing and reconnecting ith the 'other' side.
The process of re-establishing a connection between Turkish Cyprus and Greek Cyprus is important for politics in several ways. It will allow for more negotiations to be made and realization of the buffer needing to be in the past so the City and the country can start healing. It might also cause strife or confusion and possible anger in the political sense if disagreements come up but that's why the music, the restaurants, and the retail stores are so important; to help smooth out the wrinkles so difficulties are less likely to arise. culture and Politics have and always will be tied together and ever affecting one another so the fact that the cultural aspect of Cyprus is starting to focus on healing and moving on will hopefully lead to the political side jumping on board and the country will start to work past the rift that was formed in 1974 and Cyprus can be whole again.
